The more complicated the better.

At Frank L Garrett Construction, I enjoy a little fun time once in a while to create custom furniture for myself and for clients. It’s a great way to have time away from the job site of new construction. It also hones my skills as a woodworker, as furniture joints require intense attention to detail to make them look good. I employ all the joinery methods associated with the process, such as mortise and tenon, biscuits, screws, glue, domino slip mortise, and tenon, etc. The more complicated, the better. I live and breathe this stuff all day, every day, and constantly read about the new methods and the pieces of old and who built them and why. Do you know the Stickley design? How about Green and Green?

I rebuild old pieces of furniture from time to time to restore to near original condition, a process I call “Antique Spit Shinning”. I keep all the old defects and just repair or fix the broken stuff. This means I leave the dents and dings and some of the lesser scratches as they show the time and use of the item and give it that sense of old mystique. Then I will usually re-coat or wax the piece to give it a new spit shine. It's fun and relaxing in my cozy, heated shop full of tools. Do you like live edge furniture? So do I. How about a colored poured resin in a beautiful piece of walnut? Maybe some backlighting? If you can dream it, I can create it. It's all just more fun for me in the shop.
